African Instruments Ensemble
The African Instruments Ensemble draws on the rich cultural heritage of Kenyan traditional music while focusing on how this can be brought into the classroom as music and dance performance. It is inspired by the policy objective to incorporate Kenyan traditional music into Music Education in Kenya.
The main objectives of the ensemble are:
- To train students in music appreciation of the various styles and sounds involved in traditional music.
- To equip students with technical skills in handling and performing on traditional instruments.
- To bring diverse traditional musical art forms into the classroom for music and dance performance.
- To develop awareness in students of the transference of knowledge system built into African music.
The African Instruments Ensemble involves a mixed repertoire of traditional and Western-African combinations. The intention is to verse students on the versatility of instruments and musical expressions while developing technical skills in performance, musicianship and music direction. The Ensemble is not limited to Kenyan traditional music but aims to perform a wide repertoire of music representing Africa.
